THE KING

I do not like to wait.  I hate standing in line even more.  But Dad had been craving for his favourite soy sauce chicken for the longest time. Funny how Singaporeans tend to make a beeline for the food places that has the longest queue. Like that darn fish porridge in Maxwell, for instance. Or the rojak in HDB Hub.  Anyway, The King has spoken and his subjects must oblige.

And so I stood in line for exactly one hour in Chinatown Market while my mother made herself comfortable and munched on Harm Chim Bang (咸煎饼). After that we queued for fish porridge, then again for you tiao (油条) before hastily making our way home.  Heads will roll should the king not be served his lunch by 12 noon.

Sure enough, my phone rang not long after we boarded the bus.  It was The King demanding our whereabouts.

CHILLICRAB AND THE MYSTERIOUS 冠头移

Monday morning. ChilliCrab notices that a few colleagues are “missing” from the office - they are all home nursing the ‘flu. Looks like Chillicrab isn’t the only one in the office who caught the Big Bad Bug!

During lunch hour, ChilliCrab is picking out fruits in the supermarket (with the ‘flu bug going around everyone in the office could do with a dose of Vitamin C) when an Auntie approaches ChilliCrab and enquires, “请问冠头移在那里?” ChilliCrab thinks the ‘flu medication is making her dense because ChilliCrab has zero idea what "冠头移" is!

“移!移! 冠头移!” Auntie gestures in exasperation until ChilliCrab is almost certain Auntie is after some kind of fish. At this point, a supermarket attendant finally intervenes and tells Auntie, “罐头鱼放在前面第二排.” ("The canned fish is located in the second row from the front.") Auntie gives a huge sigh of relief and thank attendant profusely, while ChilliCrab wishes she could crawl (sideways, of course) into obscurity.

CHILLICRAB AND THE MANGOES

The sign above the mangoes read “$1.99 for 3”, attracting about a dozen Aunties all with an eye for bargain.  They gathered around the crates, elbowing one another, frantically grabbing the fruit as if they were free of charge. Like a flock of hens, their feathers ruffled, squawking. As though some unknown catastrophe was fast approaching and they were scrambling to peck the last grains off the supermarket floor.

Kiasuism got the better of ChilliCrab. She dived right in, dodging vicious beaks (ouch!) and menacing claws, and snatched away what she believe to be 3 of the plumiest fruit – all in under two minutes.

Fruits of my labour
