'TWAS THE WEEK BEFORE CNY

Eunice commissioned me to make rock cakes, and I got to charge her $18 for a bottle (about 12 pieces in a bottle).  Hee hee hee!

Wed 11 Feb.  My mum was out for physio therapy with our helper in tow.  I roasted some chicken wings for lunch.

Thu 12 Feb.  Had a small CNY reunion lunch.  All the usual suspects were there - my mum, my aunt, Eugene, our helper, and I.  Back at the old-fashioned Cantonese Lai Wah Restaurant.  All the dishes were fantastic, except for the fish which was one great big disappointment.

In the previous years, I'd go for a CNY Set Menu but there was always way too much food.  This time, I opted for just five dishes from the ala carte menu.  Yusheng is a must.  Then a vegetable dish, a yam ring, a fish, and finally a yifu noodle.  We still appeared to have over-ordered. :)

Creative cooking - half steamed, half deep-fried.  The entire fish was overdone and tasteless.
Hugely disappointing.

DAD CELEBRATES 88

Dad is 88 today.  To celebrate, we went to eat chicken rice. On a normal day, he will tell you that he doesn't like chicken. But for his birthday, he'd always ask for chicken rice!  As I recall, he also requested for chicken rice on his 80th birthday

Dad's appetite was surprisingly good.  We ordered half a chicken, large portions of roasted pork belly with crispy skin and honeyed char siew, and a bowl of laksa. Dad isn't fond of spicy food, yet he polished off all the laksa gravy, leaving us with just the noodles.

In the afternoon, when he was beaming after he devoured a creamy durian crepe, I asked him, "Are you happy?" He replied, "VERY happy!"

Being bogged down by illnesses and dementia Dad sinks deeper into depression day by day.  He is rarely happy so today is a day to be cherished.

This is my mother.  She complains that I take shitty photographs of her.  "You make me look like an old woman!"

RIP 舅父

My mother’s younger brother passed away this morning.    It was all very sudden.  Just yesterday, he slipped and fell while he was taking a stroll, picked himself up and went home to tell his wife, “Luckily, I didn’t hit my head.  Otherwise it would have been goodbye!”  This morning, he got out of bed feeling dizzy, dropped onto the floor and fell into a comma.  He passed away quietly in a hospital a few hours afterwards.

What can I tell you about my 舅父?  My uncle was a cheerful individual who lived a carefree existence.  He maintained a blue-collared job so that his family never went hungry and both my cousins went to school.  For many of us, we often stress about our jobs, mortgages or life in general – just because we aren’t satisfied with what we already have.  My uncle wasn’t a go-getter who expected more out of life, which was precisely why he was always light-hearted in the first place.  Nothing got him down, ever.

Modern parents would’ve been shocked by my uncle’s parenting skills (or the lack of it) because he brought his boys up in a seemingly careless fashion.  My older cousin was caught smoking in his teens, the rest of the family gasped and chided but my uncle waved everyone off with, “He's going through a phase!  Every boy his age goes through the phase.  He's only experimenting and he’ll stop before you know it.”

When the same boy decided to drop out of school at 15, his father said, “That’s fine by me.  You don’t need to do well in school in order to do well in life.”   That school dropout is now a devoted family man, owns a recycling and printing business, recently set up a new factory in Shenzhen, has a club membership and about to move into a condominium.  His younger brother is a pharmacist.  Both are gentle, soft spoken and I've never once heard them raise their voices at their parents or each other.

Sure, my uncle didn't receive proper education or spoke six languages or possess a special skill of any kind. He didn’t own a large house or drove fast cars.  You might even say he had no aspiration.  Yet he brought up his next generation to be loyal, socially responsible and respectful.   So if life was a test, surely my uncle should be awarded an A+.   Kudos to you, 舅父!  I don't think you realized just how special you were.

FESTIVE FEEDING FRENZY

My cousins came over to wish my parents “Happy New Year” this morning. My niece is so cute, is she not? She’s growing up fast. Very soon she’ll be leading the boys in a game of chase.

Tomorrow I'll be returning to work.  So ends the 5-day festive weekend, for which I'm a tad glad.  We've been feeding non-stop.

There is so much food in the house at the moment, it’s crazy.  Boxes of bak kua, pork floss encased inside crispy "love letters" are lying in ambush.  All kinds of chocolates, nuts, dried fruits and assorted cookies stacked up in various parts of the living room and dining area.  And if that ain't enough, Dad's friend brought us her homemade pineapple tarts and a HUGE orange chiffon cake.

To take a break from the festive feeding frenzy we had canned sardines and bread for dinner tonight.

DAD CELEBRATES 80

On Wed July 15, my father turned 80. We enjoyed a quiet celebration at home, followed by lunch at his favourite chicken rice restaurant afterwards.

The birthday cake came in the shape of a peach - a symbol for longevity.
